EDSTAR D3 (Data Driven Decisions!) is a record keeping system that allows school staff to document what they do for students who are at-risk of failure—and how it makes a difference.
We developed D3 over a four-year period using input and feedback from working
school counselors and other staff. It meets their needs and it's easy to use.
Just point and click for data entry. EDSTAR D3 helps counselors
and other staff keep records. The records feed into text documents that can
be opened with Excel or many other programs. This record-keeping system allows
for consistent records across different staff and different interventions. The
record files can be combined across staff, across schools, or combined with
other data for evaluation purposes—such as for accountability
to grants or for identifying effective practices.
With D3, counselors can:
- print easy-to-read reports and charts
- filter and retrieve data on subgroups of students (e.g.,"ninth grade girls in crisis intervention," "boys at risk of dropping out who are in group counseling")
- run reports on all students, selected subgroups,
or individual students
Data is simultaneously entered into a file that can be
opened by Excel®, making counseling data easy to analyze and combine with
student outcome data.
The EDSTAR D3 system, coupled with a comprehensive program
model, has proven successful in a large public school system:
• Before implementation, data showed that about 20% of students served
by counseling and support services were at risk of failing at school. The other
80% were successful students seeking help to deal with events.
• After implementation, counselors were able to identify and serve more
students at risk. Realigned services were proven effective for raising the achievement
of students served—even when services were focused on changing behavior—and
more than 75% of students served were at risk of failing at school.

to supervisors, and implement a comprehensive school counseling program.
